with the pre-test approaching, I have not much more for you to read, rather create. Because, as you may have noticed, translation is a creative process of intepreting

It's high time you got yourself a Monolingual English/English learner's dicttionary, and  take it to the class with you, since you're not allowed to use online or electronic ones at the pre-test (for obvious reasons) - such as this one I am going to give you a few tips on using it. And we will do some more translating excercises..

Jack Kerouac Translation Excercise

I am really interested in your translation of the four paragraphs from a Sme Daily article below:

Tú vetu by som čakal odo mňa

Jack Kerouac prekvapuje aj štyridsať rokov po smrti. Vlani najskôr prvýkrát vyšla necenzurovaná verzia románu Na ceste a čoskoro nato sa zjavila doteraz neznáma autorova prvotina More je môj brat. Jej slovenské vydanie predbehlo všetkých.
BRATISLAVA. Tá správa pôsobila v prvom momente všelijako, jedni ju považovali za slabší žart, druhí za nedorozumenie, ktoré sa rýchlo vysvetlí. Bola to vskutku neuveriteľná informácia, že Artforum vydá 14. mája vo svetovej premiére román Jacka Kerouaca More je môj brat, a vlastne neuveriteľná správa je to ešte stále.

Boli sme najrýchlejší

„Keď vlani na jeseň ponúkli majitelia autorských práv tento doteraz neznámy román do predaja, neváhali sme s kúpou a začali pracovať na jeho slovenskom vydaní," hovorí šéf Artfora Vladimír Michal. „Nastal klasický vydavateľský postup, Otakar Kořínek sa pustil do prekladu, a hoci nás nehnala nejaká osobitná túžba byť prví, proste sme boli najrýchlejší. Napríklad v českom Argu ešte len hľadajú prekladateľa."
Záhadou však je, že kniha nevyšla skôr v Spojených štátoch či vo Veľkej Británii, kde sa nebolo treba zdržovať jej prekladom. „Na to fakt neviem odpovedať," smeje sa Michal, „ale možno je tá odpoveď skrytá práve v knihe samotnej."
Americké aj britské vydania sú ohlásené až na začiatok novembra. Hoci kanadská pobočka internetového obchodu Amazon avizuje vydanie románu v Kanade na 12. máj, na stránke vydavateľstva HarperCollins o tom nie je žiadna zmienka, a tak je slovenské vydanie jediné, o ktorom nie sú pochybnosti.

Dear snowed-in reader,

If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'll probably want to know is where I was born, an what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth. In the first place, that stuff bores me, and in the second place, my parents would have about two hemorrhages apiece if I told anything pretty personal about them. They're quite touchy about anything like that, especially my father. They're nice and all--I'm not saying that--but they're also touchy as hell. Besides, I'm not going to tell you my whole goddam autobiography or anything. I'll just tell you about this madman stuff that happened to me around last Christmas just before I got pretty run-down and had to come out here and take it easy.
